Prices Rise In Mexico Over Past Ten Years

This is from Les, the bread guy, in La Paz by way of the La Paz Gringos Yahoo group:

Short URL: http://peninsulardigital.com/?p=32612

In the last 10 years the price of bread has risen 93%, rice 312%, beans 120%, cooking oil 174%, sugar 200%, eggs 132%, and milk 67%

That’s pretty steep, even for Mexico!

Statewide Elections Coming February 6, 2011

It’s going to take some time to get used to typing 2011. But on Feb 6 (Sunday) there will be statewide elections in Baja Sur. We will have new mayors, congress people and governors. Everything is up for grabs.

The politicking is in full swing. Posters are everywhere. Some are artfully done, others less so. Some photos endearing and others downright scary. Across Calle Hidalgo from my old office/gallery is a huge sign for Jorge Miguel Cota Katzenstein. He’s running for mayor of La Paz under the newest political party, Nueva Allianza, New Alliance. Check the photo below to understand the impact of this huge sign. The full moon is just an added treat.

Jorge Miguel Cota Katzenstein - Jewcano For Mayor Of La Paz?

Now think about Jorge’s name a bit. Cota is is father’s last name and Katzenstein his mother’s. He chose to make his mother’s name huge on the sign. Hmm. I have to believe Katzenstein is a Jewish name and under Jewish law, you are Jewish if your mother was, so is this a Jew running for mayor of La Paz? I have one other Jewish Mexican friend and he calls himself a “jewcano” – is Katzenstein one also?

I just might have to vote for him, just because he’s so different from the local norm.

Todos Santos Theatre In Need Of Chair Donations

You may be aware that the Marquez de León Theatre here in Todos Santos is under renovation. It is mostly completed but I just received this desperate plea from Heriberto Parra Hake who oversees the theatre and the Art Festival.

The Marquez de León Theater Desperately needs 45 chairs

We desperately need 45 metal folding chairs to seat orchestra musicians for the theater’s classical music concert this coming art festival as well as many others we wish to present in the future. We are asking this chairs as donations.

We have selected a folding metal chair from COSTCO “Silla plegable de acero MECO (grey)”

ITEM 153112, they cost $169 pesos each.

You can buy them yourself and deliver at the theater or you can make a deposit in the Patronato del Teatro Manuel Marquez de León, Asociación Civil, (A non profit organization) bank account BANORTE, Number 00140857476

Please help us promote classical music performances, we thank you in advance.

For further information or suggestions please advise.

More Baja Gold Mining In The Press

It’s really hard to get a solid handle on what the truth is as regards the proposed gold mines (yes, more than one) in the Sierra de la Laguna mountains and cape area. I just found yet another story in The Log online boating/fishing magazine. Read for yourself, the more info you have the better:

Las Tunas Dune Construction Update

The news is mostly good but ambivalent in ways also. The dune house that I have been writing about is still under a construction halt. In fact Profepa has posted “clausurado” signs on the site to make the work stoppage public. The bags of cement and cement mixer have been removed but blocks and other materials remain. The downside is that we now have a partially built house on the dune – the dune damage has already occurred and the house in its current state is ugly. Will Profepa have enough muscle to have the offending construction torn down and the dune restored? Quien sabe? Who knows?

More disturbing news though – I am told there is another site north of this one where construction has begun also. The lots were purchased from the same owner who continues to claim all permits are in place for building, totally ignoring the situation at this first construction site. I haven’t seen the second site but am told that a bulldozer came in and cleared the dune for building and that a storage unit has been built for materials.

I guess time will truly tell.

Happy New Year Everyone!

New Year’s eve passed without major incidents in the Todos Santos area. The weather has been chilly, 50F at night, 75F during the day. Sometimes we have a serious marine layer and clouds in the mornings. It almost feels as though it could rain. By afternoon, the sky is blue and clear.

Town was full of people for the holidays. Many have begun returning to their other lives and we will likely have a lull for a couple of weeks until the next wave of visitors begins to arrive. This was our busiest holiday season in the last three years, hopefully a foreshadowing of good things to come this season. Interest in real estate is picking up too and that’s a tremendous positive after 2 very slow years. It feels like we have survived the worst of the “crisis” and there is optimism about the future. Adios 2010!
