Deadly Fishing Boat Sinking In Mar de Cortes

This isn’t directly about Todos Santos but should be of interest to all. On July 4, a charter fishing boat from San Felipe on the Sea of Cortez ran into bad weather and sunk. Of the 53 passengers and crew, 1 died and 7 are still missing – I believe all are US citizens.

Municipal Policemen Murdered In San Antonio, Baja Sur

A very sad, unusual and disconcerting event occurred in a small town not far from La Paz, BCS on June 12. Two municipal policemen were setup and murdered in cold blood by unknown assailants armed with AK 47s. There is no official word on the motive and currently no one is mentioning “narcos” being involved. The policemen were totally out gunned and the army was called in to pursue the assailants. None of the killers has yet been apprehended.

This type of violence is new to Baja Sur at least in my memory. Since the policemen were singled out and targeted, many here believe these killings were of a personal nature but we won’t know for certain until the killers are found.

Unreal Damage To Japan In Satellite Photos

These before and after photos are hard to believe. They sadly remind me of the devastation on the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina. Thanks to the Baja Pony Express for the link.

Summer Issue El Calendario de Todos Santos Posted Online Today!

I am very happy to say that the summer edition of El Calendario arrived 4 days early from the printer and is already on the streets of  Todos Santos and will be distributed to select locations in La Paz and San Jose del Cabo next week.

I have just completed posting it online. We are celebrating our 100th issue and the art in the issue will take you down our memory lane with covers from past issues. One page (#42) is particularly revealing as it lists all the writers and artists that we have featured and who have helped us to become the essential guide to Todos Santos. Thanks all of you!

Click on the cover below to go to the summer issue. Next issue is November 1 with October 3 deadline.

Enjoy the summer!!!

Tropical Storm Lowell

TS Lowell stills seems set on coming close to Todos Santos. There is some doubt as to whether (weather?) he will still be a tropical storm when he finally makes landfall. The latest forecasts believe he will deteriorate to tropical depression level before reaching land.

From the info I read, Lowell should be about like Julio was. Some 30 mph+ winds and rain. Todos Santos should get through this without major issues.

Galeria de Todos Santos is Moving!

Yes, it’s official. The Galeria de Todos Santos, run by Michael and Pat Cope with the assistance of Erick Ochoa, is changing locations. They have been on the corner of Topete and Legaspi in the Todos Santos Inn building for 14 years or so. The annex located on Hidalgo and Centenario will also close. Michael and Pat will be taking over the Maya Roca Real Estate building on Calle Juarez, in between the Cultural Center and Milagro Real Estate. The location is large enough that they will be able to house the gallery, art studio and continue Michael’s tapas bar that had been part of La Copa wine bar at the Inn. Details about the restaurant aren’t totally settled yet, but I’ll post more when I know more.

Felicidades Michael and Pat!!!

More Disturbed Weather

I sound like a broken record but this IS unusual. Our fifth named storm of the season, Tropical Storm Elida, is floating off the coast of Acapulco and should move generally to the west northwest, passing a few hundred miles south of Cabo San Lucas. Maybe we will get some rain. Maybe some surf. We should not really feel the direct effects of the storm, which will become a hurricane by then.

More ominous is the invest 99 (disturbed area that could become a storm) computer models, as it is predicted to move north paralleling the Baja coast. July is far too early for this type of weather behavior. Depending on how 99 develops, we could get wind, rain and/or surf.

The big red blob to the right is Tropical Storm Elida. The smaller blob directly south of the tip of Baja is invest 99. It really looks like we might be getting some rain very soon now.

Unbelievable!!! More Tropical Storms Already!!!

This is not good. The fourth named tropical storm of our short season is heading towards Baja. It shouldn’t make it here, but this is highly unusual and not a good sign at all. At the very least it will cause the weather to become hotter and stay that way. It’s going to be a long summer.

His name is Douglas and you can read more about him and see maps and charts at Weather Underground.

Just as hard to fathom, right behind Douglas is another disturbed area that could become a named storm and follow the same path as Douglas. This area is currently being called Invest 96. Hot hot hot!!!

Los Cerritos Surf Contest – June 7, 2008

The contest was held Saturday, June 7 at Los Cerritos. There was a good sized crowd on hand and many hopeful surfers drawn by the prize money, $500 US 1st place, $300 US 2nd place and $200 US 3rd place. I understand that Irak Collins took the first place prize. As promised, some photos from the contest.

The little sign in front of the Cerritos Beach Club says “Private Guests Only” – hmmm, a “sign” of things to come, i.e. the Caboization of local beaches. By law, the beaches belong to the people who are guaranteed access. But everyone in Los Cabos knows how that works.
